Xavier heads to No. 8 Arkansas for three-game series

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Xavier baseball fell, 23-11, to No. 15 Louisville at Jim Patterson Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Musketeers got the run back in the second after Tommy Townsend got on with a single and scored on a double from Eddie Peters.

Louisville posted a seven-run bottom of the second to take an 8-1 lead. Xavier made it 8-2 in the next frame with a solo home run from Landon Mensik, but the Cards got the run back in the bottom of the third to maintain the seven-run lead.

Xavier posted five runs on six hits in the fourth, with Jonathan Fitz getting the frame started with a lead-off single, coming home on a Townsend home run. A single from Peters and a double from Donavan Canterberry put two on for Josh Stonehouse, who brought in three RBI with a home run to cut the UofL lead to two, 9-7.

The Musketeers followed that with a pair of runs in the fifth, with Peters getting on with a single, his third hit of the day, and Canterberry moving him to scoring position with a single. JD Crisp singled to center field to bring in Peters, and a Luke Hammond single brought in Canterberry to tie the game at 9-9 headed to the bottom of the fifth.

Louisville posted another seven-run frame in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead at 16-9, added six in the seventh and one in the eighth make it a 23-9 Louisville lead.

In the ninth, Canterberry got on with a double, his third hit of the day, and Crisp followed with his third hit of the night, a home run, to bring in two runs and set the final score at 23-11.

The Musketeers now head to No. 5 Arkansas for a three-game series, running Feb. 20-22, in Fayetteville, Ark.

JD Crisp went 3-5, hitting his second home run of the season. He finished with three RBI and a run scored.
Josh Stonehouse drove in three RBIs and scored a run with a home run, his second of the season.
Tommy Townsend went 2-5, driving in two RBIs with his second home run of the season and scoring a pair of runs.
Eddie Peters went 3-4 at the plate, driving in an RBI and scoring a pair of runs.
Landon Mensik went 2-5, picking up an RBI and a run scored on his second home run of the season.
Donavan Canterberry went 3-4 with a pair of doubles, also getting on with a walk, scoring three runs.
Luke Hammond drove in an RBI with a single, also getting aboard with a walk.
Jonathan Fitz recorded a hit (1-3) and a walk, scoring a run.
