Musketeers open BIG EAST play with three-game series at UConn this weekend

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning to take the walk-off 4-3 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday evening at Hayden Field.

The win, Xavier's fourth-straight over the Bearcats, moves the Musketeers to 8-18 on the year, while the Bearcats dropped to 19-8.

Cincinnati scored runs in the first and third inning to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh when the Musketeer tied it up. Donavan Canterberry led off the inning with a single, and Jorge Valdes brought him in with his first home run of the season to make it a 2-2 game, with the tie holding as the game headed into the ninth.

A Bearcat run in the top of the ninth put Cincinnati in front, 3-2, going into the bottom of the frame. Luke Hammond led off the Xavier half of the ninth with a solo home run, his first of the season, to tie it at 3-3. Clay Burdette got on with a two-out double, and after Peter Johnson was intentionally walked, Jonathan Fitz singled to left field to bring Burdette in from second for the walk-off 4-3 win.

Xavier heads to Storrs, Conn., this weekend to open up BIG EAST play with a three-game series against UConn. The series with the Huskies gets underway on Friday, March 27 and runs through Sunday, March 29, streamed live on ESPN+.

AT THE PLATE

Jorge Valdes (1-4, 1BB) drove in a pair of RBIs and scored a run after hitting his first home run of the season.
Luke Hammond (2-4) finished with an RBI and a run scored on his first home run of the season to tie the game in the ninth.
Jonathan Fitz went 2-4 with a walk, driving in the game-winning RBI in the ninth.
Clay Burdette (1-4, 1BB) finished with a double and a run scored.
Donavan Canterberry recorded a hit (1-4) and scored a run.
Peter Johnson got on with a pair of walks, Tommy Townsend and Josh Stonehouse each got on with a walk as well on a seven-walk day for the Musketeers.

Joey Young made the start on the mound, going 2.1 innings with two runs scoring on four hits. Young finished with a season-high five strikeouts to just one walk.
Michael Murphy entered with on out in the third, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks, striking out three.
Jake Hooker came in for the sixth, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings with three hits allowed, striking out a pair.
Garrett Helsel entered for the eighth, going 1.1 innings with one run scoring on two hits.
Sam Hoeft came in with one on and one out in the ninth and pitched the final 0.2 inning, not allowing a run or a hit. Hoeft picked up the win, his first as a Musketeer.
