Xavier Falls 3-0 in Season Opener

MILWAUKEE – Xavier fell in the season opener 3-0 to No. 4 Pittsburgh at the AVCA First Serve Tournament in Milwaukee, Wis. Monday evening.
Charlotte Moriarty led the match in kills, hitting a career-high 17 against the Panthers.
The Musketeers held it close in the first frame, taking a 7-6 lead after a kill from McKinley Boehm. Macy Hatkevich hit a service ace to make it 10-9, forcing the Panthers to call a timeout. Pitt pulled away at 20-24 for set point, but Iyanna Battle managed her second kill of the frame to extend the set. The Musketeers tied it 24 all before Pitt finished the set on a Musketeer error.
Pittsburgh went on a 6-0 run in the beginning of the second set before hitting a service error to send the ball back to the Musketeers. Moriarty had back-to-back kills to bring Xavier up to 5 points to Pitt's 13. Moriarty would have three more kills but the Musketeers would not connect the points and fall 13-25 in the second set.
In the third and final frame, Pitt would lead by as much as eight to secure the 18-25 victory. Jenna Barhorst hit her 10th career service ace to bring the score within a point. Ava Tilden, Quinci Thomas, Battle, Moriarty and Boehm each had kills in the third set.
Xavier starts the season 0-1 on the season.

Moriarty led the match in kills with 17 and tallied five digs with a .325 hitting percentage. She scored 17.5 of Xavier's 39 points.

Kelsey Niesen, Macy Hatkevich and Barhorst each had a service ace against the Panthers.

Boehm had three blocks and four kills.

Niesen had a team high 10 digs in the match.
Up next, the Musketeers will travel to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Tournament. XU is set to face Ball State Aug. 29 at 3 p.m. and Notre Dame Sunday Aug. 30 at 1 p.m.
