Xavier Sweeps Georgetown in Conference Opener

CINCINNATI – Xavier volleyball swept Georgetown in the BIG EAST opener at Cintas Center Friday, Sept. 25.
The Musketeers move to 8-4 on the season and 1-0 in league action. XU is on a two-match win streak.
Xavier secured the first set of BIG EAST play 25-19 over Georgetown. Ava Tilden found the first Xavier kill of the match. The Musketeers had 13 kills in the first set, and Tilden accounted for six of them. The teams remained tied through 17 all when Xavier went up three off two errors and a Tilden kill. Three more kills, an ace from Jenna Barhorst and a Hoya error would finalize the set.
Xavier started the second set 3-1 with three kills from Tilden, Margo Kemp, and Gabby Semona. Tied up at six, a kill from Macy Hatkevich and two Hoya errors brought the Musketeers up three. Back-to-back errors by Xavier would tie it back up at 14. The Musketeers then went on a 6-2 run to go up 20-16. In that time, Charlotte Moriarty had two kills and an ace. Georgetown would get to 21 points, but it would not catch up to the Musketeers, winning the set 25-21.
Xavier and Georgetown stayed within a point of each other in the final set until the Hoyas went on a 5-0 run to go up 14-11. A kill from Tilden ended their run but three more Hoya kills and a Musketeer error put Georgetown up 18-13. Down 22-17, three errors and a kill from Catherine Flaharty brought XU back 22-21. Two errors put Georgetown to set point but Kemp managed a kill and the Hoyas made an error to level the set. Georgetown got to 25 first with a kill , but the Musketeers responded with kills from Moriarty and Kelsey Niesen and a Georgetown error to secure the conference opening sweep 27-25.

Tilden had a match high 12 kills and hit .462 in the BIG EAST opener.

Semona had five kills and managed a .429 clip.

Moriarty had a match high 18 digs and a pair of aces. She also had eight kills.

Hatkevich had 28 assists, five kills and eight digs.

As a team, Xavier hit .246 and held Georgetown to just .179.

The Musketeers host Villanova Saturday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. for the second BIG EAST match of the season.
