Ed Burns, who lettered two years in football, also played baseball, basketball and boxed in his time at Xavier.
In addition to his participation in multiple sports, he drew sketches for the yearbook. As a result of his contributions on the court, field, and in the ring, Burns was a member of the Legion of Honor at Xavier.
Known as "the Columbus Flash", Burns was instrumental in helping Xavier's football team to a 9-1 record in 1926 where he shared the backfield with the legendary Paul "Pude" Beatty. Following a school legend was not an easy task but Burns did so very nicely. He ended the 1927 season with five multiple touchdown games which helped Xavier to an 8-1-1 record. Burns displayed his versatility through his years at Xavier, he was not only explosive as a halfback but also very skilled as a punter. His abilities provided inspiration for his teammates on the field, Burns broke tackles and avoided defenses to give his team life in many situations.Â
Burns not only was active in football but also basketball where he played in the first ever game at Schmidt Field House and he also propelled Xavier to a 29-25 victory over Cincinnati in the dedication game with 11 points. Known as the "Knockout King", he lettered in boxing as a middleweight and knocked out one of Washington and Lee's best boxers in the second round. This is only on accomplishment on the list for Burns.Â
