Michael Davenport was a Xavier co-captain on the men's basketball team his junior and senior seasons. In 1991, he was honored as an All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference Second Team selection and was named All-Mideast Honorable Mention by Basketball Times.
A four-year starter, Davenport helped Xavier average over 24 wins per season during his career as a Musketeer. XU compiled a 97-31 (.758) record during Davenport's four seasons, including four NCAA Tournament bids and XU's first-ever berth in the NCAA "Sweet 16" his junior year. XU recorded two of its best season records ever during Davenport's junior year (28-5 in 1989-90) and freshman year (26-4 in 1987-88).
Davenport, a member of the Xavier 1,000-Point Club who scored 1,172 career points (35th all-time), was a solid defender and explosive offensive player, particularly from three-point range. His senior year he was the team's leading scorer before he went down to an injury at Saint Louis, but still finished second on the team and seventh in the MCC with an average of 14.1 ppg. He also ranked third in the MCC in three-point field goals made per game (2.1) and fifth in the MCC in three-point percentage (.413).
He graduated with the school record for most career three-pointers of 151, although that record has since been broken. He connected for four three-pointers in a game on nine different occasions as a senior, including the MCC Championship game where he scored 19 points. He was selected to the 1991 and 1988 All-MCC Tourney Teams.
