Mac Garrigan was one of the best and most-feared players in Xavier soccer history. Garrigan wasted no time at Xavier before making an impact. As a freshman, he earned a starting spot on the team in the midfield. That team finished the season with a record of 4-8-1.
But things started to turn around for the Musketeers, and Garrigan's defensive prowess was a big factor in the turn around. In the first four years of Xavier soccer, including Garrigan's freshman campaign, the Musketeers recorded nine shutouts. As a sophomore, Garrigan became the heart of Xavier's defense at the sweeper position. In the final three years of his playing career, Xavier recorded 15 shutouts. The 1979 season was one of the best defensive seasons in Xavier school history. The team set a school record by allowing only 18 goals in 15 games and recording six shutouts.
Garrigan earned several accolades for his outstanding play. As a sophomore, he was an Honorable Mention selection for the All-Mideast Team. The following season, he made the region's Second Team. The Mideast Region changed its name to the Great Lakes Region in 1980, and Garrigan earned a spot on the Region's First Team as a senior.
"Mac is one of the best players ever to come out of Cincinnati," said former Xavier soccer coach Jack Hermans.
After his college playing days, Garrigan returned to Xavier to earn a Master's degree and also serve as an assistant coach for Xavier soccer. Garrigan also spent two years playing professionally in the American Soccer League.
