He goes down in history as one of the greatest all-around athletes of his day. He lettered two years in football, two years in baseball, three years in tennis and one year in basketball.
Clines, known primarily as a star quarterback in football, also established himself in basketball, baseball and was captain of the tennis team for two years.
On the football field, this Musketeer quarterback was known as one of the better running quarterbacks in the State of Ohio. He led Xavier to an 8-1-1 season his senior year and a 9-1 mark his junior year.
Clines played a significant role in the Musketeers' 6-6 tie against the powerful Haskell Indians team of 1927. XU had been drilled 27-0 by Haskell the year before.
Clines, a great field general, was a crafty and creative signal caller for Xavier. He showed his leadership outside the playing field, also, being active in the Xavier News, the "X" Club, many social committees and student council.
