Tom O'Brien, a long-time member of Musketeer Club, was also a long-time member of the Athletic Board, including a past Chairman.
Over the last 50-60 years it's hard to think of anyone that has been more instrumental in the molding of Xavier's athletic program than Tom O'Brien. O'Brien has met every controversial issue head-on since 1947 and has been active in the screening of Xavier coaches since 1960.
O'Brien, a 1947 graduate of Xavier's business school, became actively involved with Xavier athletics immediately after his graduation. He began serving on the board of the Musketeer Club in 1947. He was the club's executive secretary for six years and served the club as President in 1961.
O'Brien helped shape the athletic philosophy of the school as chairman of the Athletic Board. He has served on the board since 1960 and was chairman from 1966-75. During that time he initiated numerous programs to help Xavier, including the research of just what it cost to put an athlete through Xavier.
It's hard to imagine a phase of the program that he hasn't been involved with over the years, as he's served as chairman of the Musketeer Club's Jamboree and has been season ticket chairman for both basketball and football.
A list of his accomplishments would hardly do him justice for fear than too many items would be left out. He's been active in every dimension of Xavier athletics over the years, from the NIT to the restoring of electing members to the "Legion of Honor."
Xavier certainly owes O'Brien many thanks for his tireless effort and dedication over the years. In fact, it was O'Brien who spearheaded the effort to initiate a Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame.
