Miami went on a 7-0 run early in the game to take a 9-3 lead with 14:31 left in the half. Then Xavier turned up the heat defensively. In fact, XU held the RedHawks to 30.0 percent (9-30) shooting from the field in the first half, including 10.0 percent (1-10) from three-point range. XU led 38-21 at halftime, outscoring the visitors 35-12 over the final 15 minutes of the first half. Sophomore forward/center David West (Garner, NC/Garner) led XU with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while shooting 7-of-9 from the field.
Two Xavier newcomers started their first games as Musketeers against Miami on Saturday. Freshman guard/forward Romain Sato (Central African Republic and Dayton (OH) Christian HS) hit three three-pointers on his way to 13 points, all of which came in the first half. In the first game of his college career, sophomore guard Lionel Chalmers (Albany, NY/Albany) collected eight points, two rebounds, four assists and tied an XU sophomore record with a team-high six steals. A third Xavier newcomer also played well in his XU debut. Sophomore guard Dave Young (New Castle, PA/New Castle), who like Chalmers sat out last season, hit 3-4 from the field, including 3-3 from three-point range en route to nine points to go with four rebounds. Xavier junior forward Lloyd Price (Wilmington, DE/Hodgson Tech and Oak Hill Academy (VA)), a preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection, sat out the game with a sprained ankle.
Xavier hosts Eastern Kentucky this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Cintas Center, a game which is already a sell-out. XU completes its four-game homestand with games next week against Samford on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. and Louisiana-Monroe on Thursday, Nov. 30, at 8:00 p.m.
