Detroit Topples Men's Soccer in Season-Opener

CHICAGO --- The Xavier mens soccer team dropped its season-opener to Detroit 5-1 on Friday night in the first match of the Leo Sweeney Jesuit Cup at Loyola University.

Xavier scored first in the match. Junior Chuck Morgan (Edmond, Okla./Memorial) got the Musketeers on the board just over a minute and a half into the match off a volley from Brandon Lalley (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville).

After that score, it was all Titans. Detroit leveled the scored at 1-all in the 30th minute, then netted the game winner just 1:02 later.

Detroit scored once more before halftime and then added two more goals in the final 11 minutes of the match to push the score to 5-1. All five Titan goals came from close range  within 12 yards of the net.

Xavier will play Jesuit Cup host Loyola at 3 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. The Musketeers open their home slate on Sunday, Sept. 8, against Western Michigan.
