CINCINNATI - University of Louisville starter Brian Halford kept the Musketeer bats quiet for most of his seven innings on the mound as the Cardinals defeated Xavier, 8-1 in non-conference baseball action.
The loss drops Xavier to 14-17-2 overall while Louisville improved to 22-12 on the season.
Halford had the Xavier bats off balance for most of the day as he allowed just one unearned run on three hits while fanning a batter and not surrendering a walk. He used the help of double plays in each of the first two innings to face the minimum through 6 2/3 before senior Mark Andres reached on a fielding error that allowed classmate Ryan Schreen to score from second for Xavier's lone run of the game.
Sophomore Mike Gallagher pitched well in just his fourth career start as he allowed six runs, five earned, on ten hits while striking out five and walking none over seven innings.
Gallagher did give up three runs in the first off four hits as Ron Braun had a two RBI single to center and Morgan Bojorquez drove in another with a sacrfice fly to centerfield.
The sophomore righty then would allow just three hits over the next five innings before the Cardinals would get three runs on three hits in the seventh as Josh Bolen had an RBI single through the left side followed by a two-run homer to left centerfield by Mark Jurich to make the score 6-1 in favor of the visitors.
Seniors Greg Wiggers and Kevin Crowley would throw one inning each to close out the game for the Musketeers. Wiggers held the Cardinals without a run in the eighth after striking out two and walking one. Crowley gave uo two runs on an RBI single from Bojorquez and an sacrifice fly by JT LaFountain.
For the second straight day, Schreen was the only Musketeer with multiple base hits as he had two.
