CINCINNATI--Xavier University's Associate Vice President and Athletic Director Mike Bobinski has announced the hiring of Steve Nester as the Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach.
"Steve Nester is an energetic and enthusiastic coach who will provide great leadership for our men's and women's cross country student-athletes," Bobinski said. "His success in building championship programs and his strong relationships with high school coaches in our area are positive attributes that will help our program achieve greater success in years to come."
Nester served as the head coach of the girls' cross country team at Turpin High School in Cincinnati for six years including the Spartans' state championship season in 2001. He was also the head boys' coach from 1996 to 2001 and was also the distance coach for the track team the last two years. Nester began coaching at Turpin in 1991 as an assistant coach for the boys' track team.
Nester was named the Cincinnati Enquirer Coach of the Year and the Southwest District Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2002.
"I appreciate the opportunity that Xavier University has presented me," Nester said. "Xavier is a nationally recognized academic institution as well as a successful athletic program. It is a well rounded university for young men and women. I look forward to working with our student athletes and developing upper echelon Division I men's and women's cross country programs."
In his last two years at Turpin High School, Nester developed three Division I scholarship college runners. In his six years at the helm of the girls' cross country team, Nester produced a 637-140 record, including the 2001 season when Turpin finished the season with a 143-3 record. In addition to Turpin's 2001 state championship, Turpin was the Division I State Runner-up in 2002. In both 2001 and 2002, the Turpin girls' cross country team was included in the Nike/Foot Locker National Top-25 Ranking.
Prior to coaching at Turpin High School, Nester was a volunteer boys' assistant coach at Kearney High School in Kearney, Nebraska for two years.
Nester, a 1992 graduate of the University of Nebraska at Kearney, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. During his time at Kearney, Nester participated on the University Track team.
Still an active runner, Nester has competed in the Flying Pig Two-Person Relay, the Dublin, Ireland Marathon, and the Portland, Oregon Marathon.
Nester continues to be involved in the community and serves as the Chairperson for the Anthony Munoz Foundation.
