Early Goals Lift Charlotte Over Xavier

CINCINNATI --- The visiting Charlotte 49ers handed the Xavier Musketeers a 3-0 defeat in Atlantic 10 Conference women's soccer action on Friday night at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. Charlotte raised its records to 3-2 in the Atlantic 10 and 7-7 overall, while Xavier fell to 2-2-2 in the A-10 and 6-6-2 overall.
Charlotte jumped out into the lead with two goals by sophomore Rachel Mees in the first five minutes of the match. Mees put the 49ers up 1-0 at 3:20 when she lofted the ball to the corner of the net off an assist from sophomore Nicole Labuda. Mees' second goal came at 4:50 when she beat the XU goalkeeper in a one-one-one move. Sophomore Lindsey Beam and senior Jenna Brenes earned assists for setting up Mees.
The 49ers closed the first half scoring when freshman Samantha Mowatt found an open net at 35:10. Sophomore Ashley Rex earned the assist on the play.
Charlotte took the 3-0 lead into halftime despite being outshot by Xavier 12-5, including 4-3 in shots on goal. Unfortunately for XU, all three Charlotte shots on goals found the back of the net.
For the match Xavier outshot Charlotte 23-9, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Xavier closes the homestand with a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday against Atlantic 10 rival Richmond.
