
Women's Tennis Opens Play at ITA Midwest Regional Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Kara Courtney and Jackie Vilines each posted a 1-1 record in singles play as the Xavier University women's tennis team opened up play Thursday in the qualifying singles bracket of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Vilines dropped her opening match to Butler's Tayo Bailey in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 6-3), but picked up a win in the consolation bracket with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Abby Showalter of Cleveland State.
Courtney also fell in the opening round as she was defeated 6-0, 6-4 by Sigrid Fischer of Indiana. The freshman quickly recovered from the morning loss as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over IPFW's Sachi Janek in the consolation draw.
XU will begin doubles play tomorrow as Courtney will team with Kristen Clary to take on Northwestern's Georgia Rose and Nazlie Ghazal while XU's No. 2 doubles tandem of Alicia Papa and Jackie Vilines is scheduled to play Emily Howard and Julie Voss of Ohio State.
