COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior guard Suntana Granderson led three Musketeers in double-figures with 20 points but it was not enough as the Xavier University women's basketball team dropped a 93-68 decision to No. 14 Maryland on Sunday afternoon in College Park. With the loss, XU evens up at 1-1 on the year while the Terps improve to 2-0.
Granderson's 20 points came on 8-of-16 shooting including 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. The Preseason All-Atlantic 10 Second Team selection scored 20 or more points for the eighth time in her career.
Senior forward Tara Boothe scored 16 points and Miranda Green chipped in with 12 points for XU.
The Terps shot 51 percent from the field (38-for-75) and held a 48-to-28 advantage on the boards.
XU trailed Maryland 48-29 at the break and the Terps extended the lead to 29 points, 63-34, with 16:20 to go.
XU would note lie down though and sprinted out to a 10-2 run, making the score 65-44 with 13:50 to go but the Musketeers would get no closer than 20 points the rest of the way.
Shay Doron, who scored her 1000th career point today, led the way for the Terps with 23 points.
Xavier stormed out of the gate and jumped out to an 8-2 lead at the 18:10 mark. Both Wallner and Green hit 3-pointers to build the XU lead.
The Terrapins tightened up defensively though and took an 11-10 lead they would not relinquish at the 14:30 mark on an Ashleigh Newman put back. Maryland would build upon its lead quickly, charging out to a 23-2 run over a seven-minute period to take a commanding 25-10 lead midway through the first half.
Maryland led by as many as 24 points in the first half, but the Musketeers put together a 5-0 mini-run at the end of the first half making the score 48-29 at the half.
XU is back in action on Friday, November 25 when the team returns home to take on Elon. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. as part of the National City Bank Xavier Invitational. Xavier's contest will be followed by the Kent vs. Valparaiso match-up scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
