Green's Last-Second Heroics Lift XU to Victory
02.25.05 | Women's Basketball
With the win, XU clinches a first round bye in next week?s A-10 Championship and improves to 18-8 on the season, 12-3 in the A-10. Richmond slips to 20-6, 11-4.
Tara Boothe led XU with 17 points and eight boards. Suntana Granderson was the third Musketeer in double-figures with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from deep.
With under a minute to go and Xavier clinging to a 62-60 advantage, Kate Flavin converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play to give UR a 64-63 edge with 44-seconds to go.
However, Tara Boothe hit on a driving lay up 12-seconds later to give XU a one point advantage. UR answered when Saona Chapman connected on a free throw to knot the score up at 64 a piece setting up Green?s heroics.
Green then drove coast-to-coast and hit on a driving floater with five-seconds to go and Chapman?s desperation 3-pointer fell short as time expired.
XU was out-rebounded 34-to-31 but outscored the Spiders 14-to-9 in second chance points. XU tied a season-low by committing only nine turnovers.
Boothe now has 1,530 career points and eclipsed Amy Wauhg's total of 1,523 career points tonight. Boothe is now in seventh place on XU's all-time scoring list.
The Musketeers have won 11 conference home games in-a-row dating back to last season and are one win shy of posting a perfect 8-0 A-10 mark at Cintas Center.
A win Sunday would mark the second time XU has gone unbeaten at home in A-10 play; the Musketeers also turned the trick in 2000-01.
Richmond stormed out of the gate, scoring the first five points of the contest and took a 9-3 lead at the 17:30 mark.
XU would battle back to take a 16-15 lead on a Michele Miller driving lay up at the 10:40 mark, but failed to score for the next 5:10 seconds and allowed the Spiders to take their largest lead of the half, 23-16, with 6:00 to go in the first session.
The Musketeers ended the half on an 11-5 run and entered intermission trailing 30-29.
The Musketeers are back in action on Sunday, February 27 when they take on Saint Bonaventure. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. at Cintas Center and senior day festivities honoring Alexis Henderson, Adeola Olanrewaju and Nikki Wells will follow the contest.
