Googins Gets First Career Win, Xavier Splits Opener Against ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Junior Drew Roberts blasted two home runs in the second game of the doubleheader against East Tennessee State and capped a seven-run eighth inning to give Xavier a 10-5 win. The Musketeers lost to the Buccaneers in the season opener, 5-3, despite out hitting ETSU 20-15 in the game. XU is now 1-1 on the season, while East Tennessee State currently stands at 3-3.
With the game tied at three entering the road half of the eighth inning, the Musketeers sent seven batters to the plate and scored six runs off of three Buccaneer pitchers before ETSU recorded a single out. Roberts delivered the final blow for the Musketeers, crushing a three-run homer to give XU the 9-3 advantage.
Roberts finished the afternoon 7-for-10 at the plate with one double, two home runs, four runs scored and five RBIs. Junior Dan Hayden also had a great day at the plate. Hayden ended the day 5-for-10 with a home run, two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs. Junior Jordan Wolf also had four RBIs on the day to tie Roberts for team-high honors.
On the mound, junior Bill Konecny threw six solid innings of three-run baseball before giving way to senior Matt Lucas, who picked up the first XU win of the season. Lucas came in to throw three innings of relief and allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Junior Mike Creevy suffered the loss in the opening game but struck out eight batters in five innings of work.
The Xavier win in the second game of the doubleheader give first-year head coach Scott Googins his first win as a head coach. The game two victory also snapped an 11-game Buccaneer winning streak in the series.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow in a single nine-inning contest. The first pitch is slated for 2:00 pm at ETSU's Cardinal Park.
