ROCK HILL, S.C. - Xavier University could not withstand a three-run third inning by host No. 26 Winthrop and fell, 5-1. Despite a 2-for-3 day by XU junior Adam Lipski, the Eagles outhit the Musketeers 9-7 in the ballgame. With the loss, Xavier falls to 2-3 on the young season, while Winthrop improves to 8-2 overall.
Lipski led the Musketeers at the plate with his two hits, which included a double and a walk. Jordan Wolf recorded Xavier's only RBI in the contest as the junior singled to right to drive in freshman Neil Lindgren, who reached on a walk. Junior Drew Roberts collected a hit to extend his current hitting streak to five games, while senior Sean Brewer also notched one hit in the game to push his current streak to five games. XU's Dan Hayden failed to collect a hit in the contest and ended his hitting steak at four games.
Junior Mike Creevy went seven strong innings giving up five runs on nine hits and striking out five but picked up the loss. Senior Steve Sakosits provided a scoreless inning of relief and struck out one of the three batters he faced.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow afternoon at The Winthrop Stadium. First pitch is slated for 2:00 pm and will match Xavier junior Bill Konecny (0-0, 4.50 ERA) against Winthrop's righty Heath Rollins (1-1, 5.82 ERA).
