ROCK HILL, S.C. - Despite a three-run seventh inning, Xavier dropped its second straight game to No. 26 Winthrop by a score of 5-3. The Eagles took the early 3-0 lead in the first inning and it was too much for the Musketeers to overcome. XU falls to 2-4 on the young campaign, while Winthrop improves to 9-2 overall.
The Eagles took the early 3-0 lead and one they would not relinquish in the first inning. The home team used three hits, an RBI-groundout and a two-out home run to plate the early three runs.
Winthrop would pick up one run in the third and another run again in the sixth before Xavier finally found some offense. Four straight singles to lead off the inning loaded the bases for the Musketeers and plated the first run as junior Dan Hayden singled to right to score Jordan Wolf. Jack Bonnikson stepped up to bat next and recorded his first career RBI as the freshman blasted a shot to center field that was caught but was deep enough to score Sean Brewer from third. Drew Roberts would be the final Musketeer to cross the plate in the game as he scored on an Eagle error, which came off of the bat of junior Matt Waskerwitz.
Wolf and Hayden each finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with Wolf picking up the only extra base hit for the Musketeers in the contest. Brewer and Roberts each extended their hitting steaks to six games and these four were the only XU players to record a hit in the game.
Junior Bill Konecny picked up the loss on the day but pitched six solid innings giving up five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. After his shaky first inning, Konecny only allowed five hits and two runs over the next five innings. Freshman Brett Greenwell provided the last two innings of relief and ended the game only allowing one hit in those final two frames.
Winthrop's Heath Rollins tossed the first complete game of the season for the Eagles and equaled his career-high with 13 strikeouts on the afternoon.
The two teams will wrap up the three game series tomorrow afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 2:00 pm as XU sophomore Michael Lucas (0-0, 3.00 ERA) takes the mound.
