CINCINNATI - The Xavier University men's soccer team opened up its spring season with a 3-1 victory over Marshall on Saturday, March 12 at the XU Soccer Complex.
Junior forward Toni Skudrzik netted a pair of goals and junior midfielder Matt Kmetz added two assists to lead XU past the Thundering Heard.
Xavier got on the board in the 15th minute. Skudrzik was fouled, setting up a free kick by Kmetz. Kmetz struck a cross from the right flank and found Skudrzik, who headed the ball into the back of the net.
Marshall would tie the score up eight minutes later when Karim Boukhemis chased down a deflection, which got behind the XU backline, and found the back of the net.
XU's game-winner came in the contest's 44th minute. Kmetz hit a cross once again from the right flank, finding sophomore Jimmy Cummings who scored off a header to give Xavier a lead it would not relinquish.
Skudrzik added an insurance goal in the 70th minute off an assist from senior Pat McAndrew.
The Musketeers out-shot Marshall 13-to-9 on the afternoon while Joe Diederich and Dale Parsons split time in net for XU and combined for two saves.
Xavier will be back in action on Saturday, March 18 when the team welcomes Glen Shields (Canada) to the XU Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
