CINCINNATI - In the home opener at Hayden Field, Xavier University could not hold a three-run advantage after seven innings and fell to visiting Youngstown State, 11-7. The Penguins would post five runs in the decisive seventh inning and answer with three more runs in the third to push the contest out of reach for the Musketeers. With the loss, XU drops to 5-12 on the season and is now 0-1 at home, while Youngstown State improves to 4-9 overall.
Three Musketeers tallied two hits in the contest with freshman Adam Pasono getting things started for the blue and white. Pasono ended 2-for-3 at the dish after recording the first triple of his career to spark the three-run first inning for XU. Jordan Wolf also had two hits on the afternoon and ended 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and his first home run of the season. Chris Lozan was the final Musketeer with two hits as he also finished 2-for-5 at the plate and an RBI. Junior Matt Waskerwitz also blasted his first home run of the season and finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Xavier recorded 11 hits in the ballgame, which marks the eighth time this season the Musketeers have notched 10 or more hits in a game. Waskerwitz also kept his hitting streak alive with his bomb in the sixth inning. He currently is carrying a nine-game hitting streak.
The two teams will take the field tomorrow afternoon for the second game of the three-game set. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm and XU's Michael Lucas will take the hill for the blue and white.
