Xavier Baseball Makes It Three Straight Wins

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Xavier Musketeers exploded for all 11 of its runs before Gardner-Webb could cross the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning. XU downed the Bulldogs by a count of 11-2 and have won its last three contests. The Musketeers are now 4-0 when scoring 10 or more runs and currently sit at 5-6 overall, while Gardner-Webb falls to 6-6 on the season.
XU plated a run in each of the first two innings before exploding for five runs in the third. Junior Drew Roberts got things started in the inning with a single to center. After another base hit by Adam Lipski, freshman Neil Lindgren continued to carry a hot bat and singled to left to plate Dan Hayden. Sophomore Rob Kelley followed up Lindgren with a shot to center to earn his first hit and RBI of the season as Lipski crossed the plate. Junior Jordan Wolf delivered the final blow in the inning as he roped a double to left to score Lindgren and Matt Waskerwitz.
The fourth inning found the Musketeers plate four more runs and increase the lead to 11-0. Sean Brewer led off the inning with a walk before Roberts and Lipski singled again moving Brewer around and allowing him to cross the plate for the first run of the inning. Kelley singled for his second time in the contest and scored Hayden before Wolf drew a walk to plate Lipski.
The Bulldogs would finally get on the board in the home half of the fourth after a leadoff home run followed by two hits and a walk would allow the only two runs of the game for Gardner-Webb.
Kelley and Roberts paced the Musketeer offense on the afternoon as each collected three hits. Wolf recorded XU's only extra base hit in the contest with his double in the third inning as Xavier outhit the Bulldogs 18-8. Seven of Xavier's nine starters recorded two or more hits in the game with only one starter not earning a hit. Brewer continued to stay hot at the plate and increased his hitting streak to 11 games this season and 12 games dating back to last year.
The Xavier pitching staff was also solid in the victory allowing only two earned runs on eight hits in the nine innings of work. Junior Bill Konecny earned his first win of the season and went four innings, allowing only two runs on five hits with a strikeout. Senior Steve Sakosits also provided four innings of work and allowed two hits with a strikeout before classmate Mark Grissom came in to work the ninth and struck out three of the four batters he faced in the final inning.
Xavier and Gardner-Webb will conclude the three-game series tomorrow afternoon. Sophomore Michael Lucas (0-1, 7.71 ERA) will take the mound for the Musketeers with the first pitch slated for 12:00 pm.
