BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Xavier took a 2-1 advantage going into the bottom half of the sixth inning before surrendering three runs on three hits to Gardner-Webb, which put the Bulldogs on top for good 4-2. The Musketeers were held to only five hits on the afternoon with GWU pounding out eight in the victory. XU now stands at 5-7 on the season, while Gardner-Webb ends its five-game skid and improves to 7-6 overall.
The Musketeers plated their only two runs in the top of the third inning as freshman Adam Pasono doubled down the left field line to score classmate Steve Brown, who led off the inning with a walk. Pasono would later score in the inning off a Bulldog wild pitch to put the blue and white up 2-1.
A hit batter and three straight singles would start the Gardner-Webb half of the sixth and spark the final Bulldog rally of the contest. The final single of the stanza would drive in two Bulldogs before a wild pitch would cap the scoring in the contest and provide Gardner-Webb with the 4-2 lead.
Five Musketeers would each record a hit in the game as Pasono and Jordan Wolf notched the only extra base hits in the form of a double apiece. Matt Waskerwitz and pinch hitter Andy Zellers each recorded a single along with Sean Brewer. Brewer again extended his hitting streak to 12 games this season and 13 overall with a single in the first inning.
Sophomore Michael Lucas went the distance on the mound for Xavier. The right-hander allowed all four runs on only eight hits and recorded five strikeouts on the day.
Xavier now returns home from spring break and will get set to take on Indiana on Wednesday, March 8. The Musketeers and Hoosiers will take the field at 3:00 pm. IU will take on Indiana State in Terra Haute on Tuesday before hosting XU and enters that contest with a record of 0-6 overall.
