ATHENS, Ohio - For the second time in three games, the Xavier baseball team used the ninth inning as a springboard to take the lead and earn the victory in the final stanza. The Musketeers downed Ohio University in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night under the lights at Bob Wren Stadium. XU used two hits and a costly Bobcat error to plate three runs in the final frame and the last four runs of the game to take the contest 4-3. Xavier improves to 13-27 on the season and has won three of its last five, while Ohio drops to 12-18 overall.
With the blue and white trailing 3-0 entering the top of the seventh, Xavier started its comeback. The first career double by freshman Richard Bautista got XU on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1 after seven innings played.
The Musketeers would keep everyone in suspense until the ninth inning before exploding for three runs to take the 4-3 advantage. After Jordan Wolf drew a leadoff walk, a single by Collin Salzenstein put runners at first and second with no one out. Freshman Neil Lindgren would then draw his team-leading 34th walk of the season to load the bases. Ohio then tried to pickoff Salzenstein at second but the ball squirted into center to allow Wolf to score, while Salzenstein and Lindgren moved up a base. A walk by freshman Steve Brown again loaded the bases before Sean Brewer's game-winning double to left put the Musketeers up for good.
Brewer continued to stay hot offensively as he finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and the two game-tying and winning RBIs. The senior is on an 8-for-15 (.533) tear with five doubles and four RBIs over the last three games. Brown, Adam Lipski, Bautista and Salzenstein recorded the other four Xavier hits in the game. Bautista drove in the other XU run in the seventh inning with his first career double down the left field line.
Freshman Brett Greenwell picked up his second win of the week and team-leading fourth of the season and now stands at 4-2 on the year. Greenwell pitched the seventh and eighth inning allowing only two hits and picking up a strikeout. David Hartman came into the game to pick up his first career save and shut the door on the Bobcats. Hartman dealt an almost perfect ninth allowing a leadoff double the sophomore made an athletic play off the mound to thwart a sacrifice bunt attempt to move the runner by gunning the runner at third. He then induced the game-ending 6-4-3 double play to earn the save and give XU the win.
The Musketeers will prepare for Atlantic 10 rival Dayton this weekend. Xavier will take on the Flyers starting on Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm at Time Warner Cable Stadium. Junior Dan Graham (2-4, 4.93 ERA) will get the nod in the first game of the series.
