DAYTON, Ohio - In the final game of the Atlantic 10 series, Xavier could not get past a stingy Dayton team that had eight of its 13 hits in the game go for extra bases. The Musketeers managed to pound out nine hits on the afternoon but only two for extra bases. With the loss, XU now stands at 13-30 on the season and 3-12 in A-10 play, while Dayton improves to 23-14 overall and 12-3 in conference action.
The Musketeers got on the board first as a leadoff walk by freshman Steve Brown was used to put the visitors up 1-0. Adam Lipski laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Brown into scoring position before a walk by Chris Lozan put runners at first and second for Jordan Wolf. Wolf stepped to the plate and delivered a single that rocketed off the first baseman and allowed Brown to score.
UD would answer the Xavier run with three of its own in the bottom half of the inning. The Flyers would use two doubles, two singles and a sacrifice hit to muster enough offense to regain the lead and leave the score at 3-1 after four innings of play. XU's struggles in the fourth inning continued today as the Musketeers have been outscored in the fourth inning 44-20 by opponents.
In the top of the fifth, Xavier used a leadoff triple by freshman Richard Bautista to start another good inning. After the triple, a shot by Neil Lindgren went off the third baseman and after he collected it an errant throw allowed the freshman to reach and Bautista to score. Back to back singles by Brown and Lipski pushed Lindgren across and knotted the score at 3-3.
A leadoff homer by UD's Michael Massa in the bottom of the fifth coupled with back to back doubles by Galen Schumm and Bryan Chandler gave the home team lead back and left the score at 5-3 after five innings played.
Two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and one in the eighth added some insurance runs for Dayton and put the score at 8-3 after eight.
XU did not give up as Brown again drew a leadoff walk to start the inning. After a fielder's choice put Lipski on first, Sean Brewer took a 3-2 pitch over the right field to cut the margin to 8-5. UD would answer by bringing in their closer who recorded the final two outs.
The freshman Brown stayed hot at the plate as he finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks and a run scored. Lipski also had two hits on the game and ended 2-for-4 with a run score and an RBI. Brewer led the Musketeers in RBIs as the senior earned two with his first homerun of the season in the top of the ninth. Jordan Wolf finished 1-for-3 with an RBI with Lozan and Bautista each finishing 1-for-4.
Michael Lucas picked up the loss for the blue and white and is now 0-7 on the season. Lucas allowed five runs on nine hits in his five innings pitched and struck out five. Mark Janszen provided the other three innings of relief and allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out two in his three innings of work.
Xavier will return to the diamond on Tuesday evening as the team travels across town to take on rival Cincinnati for the last time of the season. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 pm at the UC Baseball Stadium. The Musketeers took the first meeting of the year with the Bearcats, 11-10, at UC.
