OLEAN, N.Y. - In the second game of the three-game set, Xavier could not recover from a five-run eighth inning by St. Bonaventure and fell 9-2 in Atlantic 10 action at McGraw-Jennings Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Musketeers to 13-33 overall and 3-14 in conference action, while the Bonnies improve to 18-15 on the season and 11-5 in A-10 play.
Xavier picked up the first run of the game as a single by Neil Lindgren turned into a run after two costly St. Bonaventure errors. A fielding error by the SBU right fielder allowed Lindgren to cross the plate and XU to take the early 1-0 lead.
After a solid four innings by XU starter Mike Creevy, the Bonnies figured out the righty and began to find the holes in the Xavier defense. The Bonnies plated three runs on two hits and took the lead for good at 3-1 after five innings.
A sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth by Jordan Wolf would score Chris Lozan who led off the inning with a double and wrap up the scoring for the Musketeers.
The Bonnies answered with a five-run eighth to finish their scoring as SBU plated the five runs on four hits including a grand slam.
Lozan and Dan Hayden finished the game 2-for-4, while Adam Lipski, Steve Brown and Lindgren each had a hit on the game. Wolf picked up the only RBI for XU while Brown and Lipski drew the only two walks on the afternoon.
Creevy allowed four runs on 10 hits and struck out five in his seven innings of work, while reliever David Hartman allowed five runs on four hits in his one inning of work.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field. The first pitch is slated for 12:00 pm and will see Xavier's Michael Lucas take the hill and try to take the final game of the set.
