ARLINGTON, Va. - The Xavier baseball team took leads late into both games of the doubleheader against George Washington but could not hang on as the Musketeers fell 4-3 and 6-3 in Atlantic 10 action at Barcroft Park on Sunday afternoon. Chris Lozan finished the day 3-for-7 with two of his three hits leaving the park but it was not enough as XU outhit the Colonials 16-11 on the afternoon but committed three costly errors compared to only one by GW. With the loss, Xavier now stands at 10-22 overall and 2-7 in A-10 action, while George Washington improves to 11-20 on the year and 4-5 in conference play.
The Musketeers led 3-0 in the eighth inning of game one when three XU errors handed GW three unearned runs that tied the game 3-3. The Colonials did not record a hit in the inning and would use a walk-off homerun to score the game winner in the bottom half of the ninth to earn the win.
In game two, Xavier was tied with the Colonials 3-3 entering the bottom of the fifth but a walk followed by a single was capitalized on by GW after Tom Shanley blasted a three-run shot to left to break the tie and produce the go-ahead runs.
Four Musketeers collected three hits on the afternoon. Chris Lozan, Danny Hayden, Jordan Wolf and Sean Brewer each tallied three hits in the game, while Lozan blasted two of his three out of the park. Lozan and Brewer each ended with two RBIs, while Matt Waskerwitz and Richard Bautista each had one.
Sophomore Michael Lucas went 7.2 innings and only allowed three runs (no earned) on four hits while striking out five but got the no decision.
Xavier will have tomorrow off before traveling to Oxford to take on the RedHawks for the second time this season. XU spoiled Miami's home opener earlier this year at McKie Field at Hayden Park. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 pm under the lights.
