PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Steve Brown continued to stay hot at the plate and extended his team-best hitting streak to 18 games as Xavier downed La Salle in Atlantic 10 action on Saturday afternoon at Elmwood Park. The Musketeer pitching staff combined for a two-hit shutout and the XU offense provided seven hits on the day. The win pushes Xavier to 16-37 overall and 6-18 in conference action, while La Salle slides to 17-31 on the season and 9-14 in A-10 action.
The Musketeers put a run on the board first as Adam Pasono led off the game with a double to left. Brown advanced Pasono to third with a groundout and allowed Neil Lindgren to record the sacrifice fly to center to push the run across and take the early 1-0 lead.
Junior Jordan Wolf led off the top of the third with a single to center and stole second during the next at-bat to put him in scoring position. A fly out to right by Pasono pushed Wolf to third and a single by Brown plated Wolf and continued his streak.
XU scored its final two runs in the top of the seventh as a leadoff single by Sean Farrell was followed by a double by Dan Hayden to score the first run. Hayden would later cross after a costly error by the left fielder sailed second base.
Wolf led the Musketeer offense with a 2-for-4 effort on the day. Brown again notched a single to move his hitting streak to 18 games and finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Matt Waskerwitz, Hayden, Farrell and Pasono each were 1-for-4 on the day with Hayden and the freshman Lindgren each tallying an RBI.
Dan Graham threw eight innings of two-hit baseball and picked up his third win of the season. Freshman Charlie Leesman entered in the ninth to shut the door as he struck out the side and preserved the win.
Xavier will have the next week off as the Bowling Green game scheduled for Tuesday, May 16, has been cancelled. The Musketeers will wrap up their schedule with A-10 opponent Saint Joseph's next weekend in Philadelphia. The opening game will be on Thursday afternoon starting at 3:00 pm.
