PHILADELPHIA - Xavier took the second game of its Atlantic 10 series against Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at Elmwood Park, 7-5. Despite being outhit in the game, the Musketeers had four doubles and one homerun on the afternoon marking five of the six hits going for extra bases. With the win, XU improves to 18-37 on the season and are now 7-18 in conference action, while SJU stands at 17-38 overall and 9-17 in A-10 play.
With the score 1-0 in favor of the Hawks, Sean Brewer got the Musketeers on the board as the senior delivered a two-run shot over the left field wall in the top of the fourth. Neil Lindgren drew his team-leading 43rd walk of the season to give Brewer the second RBI.
Saint Joseph's responded in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on three hits and regained the lead, 3-2.
Xavier answered the SJU inning with a four-run sixth and regained the lead for the second time in the game. Freshman Steve Brown drove in Adam Pasono with a double to right center and Brown ensured his hitting streak stayed in tact. Two more doubles in the inning by Neil Lindgren and Andy Zellers plated the final three runs and pushed the XU lead to 6-3.
Saint Joseph's would plate one in the bottom of the sixth and one in the eighth but that would be all the Musketeers would allow for the remainder of the game.
XU tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Pasono drove in Collin Salzenstein who was pinch running for Zellers after his leadoff double.
Offensively, Zellers led the way with his 2-for-4 effort with two doubles and two RBIs. Brewer finished 1-for-3 with the fourth inning homerun, two runs scored and two RBIs. The freshman trio of Pasono, Brown and Lindgren each finished with a hit in the contest and a run scored.
Michael Lucas picked up his second win of the season and second win in his last two starts as well as the sophomore finished with only allowing three runs on seven hits in his five innings of work and he struck out four. Freshman lefty Charlie Leesman picked up his first career save as he closed the door on the final inning and a third and allowed only one batter to reach base.
The final game of the series will get underway tomorrow afternoon starting at 12:00 pm at Elmwood Park's Latshaw/McCarthy Field. Xavier's Dan Graham (3-5, 3.95 ERA) will take the mound and look for the series sweep against Saint Joseph's Chris Prescott (2-7, 6.41 ERA).
