Juniors Set Career Mark as Xavier Downs Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Juniors Jenni Horvath and Jill Quayle established a new career mark in kills and helped Xavier down Charlotte in each teams Atlantic 10 Conference opener on Friday night at Halton Arena. Horvath posted a double double with a career-high 16 kills and 11 digs in the match and Quayle ended with a career-high 18 kills as each helped XU emerge with a win 3-1. The Musketeers are now 7-7 on the season and 1-0 in A-10 play, while the 49ers drop to 10-6 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
The match saw 12 ties and two lead changes over the course of four games with XU taking the match by scores of 30-24, 21-30, 30-23 and 30-24. As a team, the Musketeers posted 70 kills and a .286 hitting percentage to go along with 12 team blocks to limit the 49ers to a .270 hitting percentage and 59 kills.
Horvath notched her first career double double after setting a new career-high with 16 kills and adding 11 digs to go along with a .481 hitting percentage. Quayle ended with her new career-high of 18 kills on 34 swings to post a .412 hitting percentage. The junior also added a team-high six block assists in the victory. Senior Danielle Skrajewski continued to lead the way as the Downingtown, Pa. native posted her third consecutive and 42nd career double double on the evening. Skrajewski finished with a team-leading 18 kills and 11 digs and was one of five Musketeers with 10 or more digs on the night. Freshman Lauren Kaminsky led the XU defense with 13 digs and added eight kills, five block assists and two aces. Sophomore Megan Hellmann also finished with 10 digs and added one ace. Classmate Jenn Welsh helped improve her standing in the conference as she dished out 62 assists and nine digs.
With the win, Xavier takes the lead in the all-time series against the 49ers by a count of 3-2. The Musketeers have taken the last two meetings in the series, winning last years meeting at Cintas Center 3-1.
The Musketeers will return to the court this Sunday at 12:00 pm and take on George Washington at the Smith Center in Washington, DC. GW fell to Dayton this evening by scores of 30-19, 30-19 and 30-27. The Colonials lead the all-time series, 13-10, over XU.
