Volleyball Falls to Miami (Ohio), 3-0, in A-10/MAC Challenge

OXFORD, Ohio - The Xavier volleyball team fell to the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks, 3-0 (36-34, 30-27, 30-24), on Friday in the Musketeers' first match of the 2007 A-10/MAC Challenge. Two XU netters posted double-double's for the match and freshman Chelsea Campbell tallied a career-high 10 kills on the night.
Also for Xavier (23-10, 11-2 A-10), sophomore Kelly Ruth had a match-high 14 kills to go along with 14 digs for her 14th double-double of the season. Freshman Claire Paszkiewicz also had a double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs while sophomore Lauren Kaminsky got under 14 digs as well.
The 2007 A-10 Player of the Year, senior Jill Quayle had a team second-best 11 kills in the match and 2007 A-10 All-Rookie Team member freshman Katie Russell was one dig shy of her own double-double (10K, 9D).
The first game went to extra points as Xavier used a 7-0 run to overcome a five-point deficit and took over the lead, 24-22. XU went up 34-33 after a kill from Ruth but Miami scored three straight points to take the first game, 36-34.
MU jumped out to an early 10-4 lead to open the second frame but XU put together a couple of runs to cut the RedHawk advantage to two, 21-19, capped off with a kill from Quayle. A kill from Ruth pulled Xavier to within one, 28-27, out of an XU timeout but Miami scored two consecutive points to close the game with a 30-27 victory.
After the intermission, Xavier scored the first two points of the third game but Miami rattled off six straight to go up, 6-2. XU could not regain the lead, getting no closer than to within one, 18-17. The RedHawks won game three, 30-24, and the match, 3-0.
For Miami, Melissa Zenz got under a match-high 19 digs while Emily Schroeder paced the RedHawks in the kills column with 13 on the night.
The Musketeers return to action Saturday afternoon when they face Western Michigan in their second match of the A-10/MAC Challenge.
