BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - After dreary conditions cancelled yesterday's game, Xavier and Western Kentucky played a doubleheader this afternoon at Nick Denes Field. The Hilltoppers took advantage of the poor conditions and took both games from the Musketeers. The loss drops XU to 0-6 on the season, while the series sweep moves WKU to 5-1 overall.
In the opening game, the Musketeers could not rattle WKU starter Bart Carter as he threw 6.0 innings of five-hit baseball to go along with seven strikeouts to keep XU in check.
Senior Jordan Wolf was the lone bright spot in the XU offense as the catcher posted a 2-for-3 game. Steve Brown, Matt Waskerwitz and Robbie Kelley also collected one hit in the game as the Musketeers were held to no extra base hits in the first game.
Bill Konecny started on the mound for the Musketeers and went a solid 6.0 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and had five strikeouts. He gave way to freshman Zac Richard and the righty gave up two runs in his 2.0 innings and had a strikeout.
The series finale produced the same results as the XU offense struggled. Sophomore Sean Farrell recorded the lone extra-base hit in the form of a double and finished 1-for-4. Classmate Adam Pasono was the only player to notch two hits in the game for Xavier and he finished 2-for-4 at the plate with the lone XU RBI, which plated Wolf in the first before the Musketeers allowed 13 unanswered runs.
Mike Creevy got the nod on the hill in the final game and went 4.0 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and tallying five strikeouts. Four Musketeers combined to throw one inning to close out the game as sophomore Charlie Leesman saw his first action of the season and went 1.0 innings allowing no earned, two hits and had a strikeout. Senior David Hartman wrapped up the game throwing a scoreless eighth, retiring all three batters in order.
The Musketeers will return to the diamond this Wednesday, February 28, as XU will travel to Kentucky for a two-game set. Xavier will take on the host Wildcats at 2:30 pm and then follow that game with a nine-inning set against Oakland starting at approximately 5:30 pm.
