LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A slow start on offense was a result of Louisville's Zach Pitts tossing a four-hit combined shutout as Xavier could not get past the host Cardinals in non-conference action on Friday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium. The loss drops the Musketeers to 3-15 overall, while the Cardinals improve to 10-7 overall.
Xavier faced a tough foe on the mound this afternoon as XU was no-hit through six before finally connecting on four hits over the last three innings. Louisville's Pitts improved to 4-1 on the season and went 8.0 innings. Pitts allowed only four hits, while recording six strikeouts.
Adam Pasono was the first XU batter to get to Pitts after roping a single to right field in the top of the seventh. Senior Andy Zellers would also single through the right side in the inning but with two outs and runners on first and second Pitts induced the lineout by Neil Lindgren to end the threat.
Matt Waskerwitz led off the eighth with a single to center but a ground ball by Jordan Wolf turned into an inning killer as the double play was turned for two quick outs. Adam Lipski would follow with a single down the right field line for the last Musketeer hit before a strikeout ended the eighth.
Wolf's team-best seven-game hitting streak came to an end this afternoon as the senior finished 0-for-4 at the plate. Zellers ended his day 1-for-2 with a walk, while Lipski and Waskerwitz were 1-for-3 on the day.
The Musketeers and Cardinals will take the field for the second game in the series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm at Jim Patterson Stadium. XU will have senior Bill Konecny on the mound.
