WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - A rough final day of competition dropped the Xavier women's golf team into sixth place in the 19 team field at the 6,030 yard Marsh Hawk Course at Ford's Colony. Senior Kathleen Hardy had the best Xavier round of the day, an eight-over par 80, to lead the Musketeers on the final day at the William & Mary Invitational.
Western Michigan held off a remarkable surge from Methodist University to earn the team title (617, +41). Methodist improved their first day total by 33 strokes to jump into second place (619, +43). Winthrop (+48), Columbia (+60), and Marshall (+63) finished ahead of XU in the standings as well. The Musketeers were able to hold off Boston College and a surge from Penn State to remain one and two strokes ahead of each, respectively.
Laura Bavaird of Western Michigan continued her dominance and earned the individual title with a final of 146 (+2). The Methodist University surge was in large part due to Katie Dick, who shaved 18 stokes off her first day total to shoot a tournament-best 67. Senior Kara Manis of Xavier fell from the top ten, but still led XU overall with a 13th place tie at 156 (12-over).
Kathleen Hardy finished in a tie at 22nd place for the Musketeers, just two strokes off Manis. Freshman Mary Beth McKenna had a tough day on the course, dropping into a tie at 38th place with a 19-over par 163. Junior Diana Torry was the lone Musketeer to improve, earning a tie for 46th at +20. Two strokes behind her was freshman Lindsay Steiner, finishing at 22-over in a tie for 50th place.
The Musketeers return to the links in two weeks for the two-day Illini Spring Classic hosted by the University of Illinois. The event is the final tournament for XU before the CAA Championship starting April 20.
