CINCINNATI - CINCINNATI - One day removed from posting 23 runs, Xavier was outlasted by visiting Butler and fell 4-1 in non-conference action at Hayden Field on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Jordan Wolf homered for the third time in two days but it was not enough. The loss drops the Musketeers to 25-28 on the season, while Butler improves to 20-29 overall.
The Bulldogs opened the game with three straight hits to welcome XU starter, Brett Greenwell. With the three hits, Butler scored the first run of the game and would not trail for the remainder of the contest.
BU would score again in the fourth and sixth inning to make it 3-0 and recorded a hit in each of the first six innings.
Wolf would drive in the only run for the Blue and White in the bottom of the seventh as he sent the first pitch of the inning over the left center field wall to close the gap to 3-1.
Adam Lipski ended the day 2-for-4 at the plate to lead all Xavier hitters. Wolf, Pat Coffey and Adam Pasono each had a hit to account for the remainder of the five Musketeer hits. Pasono finished 1-for-1 with a double, while Coffey beat out a ground ball to notch the infield hit.
Greenwell took the loss as the sophomore went 6.0 innings and allowed three earned on 10 hits but struck out four. Freshman John Iborg threw the next two innings and pitched well as he allowed no hits and three walks.
Xavier will welcome UMass to Hayden Field for the final A-10 series of the season. The XU pitcher is scheduled to be senior Bill Konecny. First pitch for tomorrow's game is slated for 2:30 pm with Friday's game at 2:30 pm and Saturday's beginning at noon with senior day festivities 15 minutes before the game.
