CINCINNATI - Despite a 10-hit effort, Xavier fell to visiting Massachusetts, 6-3, in game two of the Atlantic 10 series on Friday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Musketeers left seven runners on base and outhit the Minutemen 10-7 but could not capitalize on runners in scoring position. The loss drops XU to 26-29 on the season and 16-10 in the conference, while UMass is now 22-24 overall and 13-13 in the A-10.
UMass scored the first five runs of the contest before Xavier could answer. Back to back homeruns started the scoring for the Minutemen as Adam Tempesta and Bryan Adamski each sent a ball over the left field fence. Two more crossed in the top of the fifth before the final run was scored in the sixth, putting the advantage at 5-0 for the visitors.
Xavier would respond with its big inning in the bottom of the sixth as three straight singles by Adam Pasono, Neil Lindgren and Jordan Wolf scored Pasono. A double by Adam Lipski brought in the remaining baserunners before Lipski was thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple. After the inning was finished, XU trailed 5-3.
The Minutemen would clamp down and not allow another Xavier run the rest of the contest and UM tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth as Bill Rankin was hit by a pitch and then crossed the plate after a Ryan Franczek double.
Lipski led the offense with a 1-for-2 day at the plate and two RBIs. Wolf finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and extended his current hitting streak to 10 games. Lindgren also had a 2-for-4 day with a run scored.
Charlie Leesman took the loss for the Blue and White after allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits in 6.0 innings. Freshman Zac Richard provided relief and allowed a run on two hits in his 3.0 innings of work.
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow afternoon as game three will begin at 12:30 pm with Senior Day festivities at Hayden Field getting underway around 12:15 pm. Xavier will have junior Michael Lucas (3-6, 5.09 ERA) on the mound with UMass sending sophomore right hander Tim Cominsky (3-4, 3.98 ERA) to the hill.
