CINCINNATI - Allowing only one point, the Xavier men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season in decisive fashion by downing visiting IPFW, 6-1, Sunday at the Five Seasons in Cincinnati. The Mastodons' only point was gotten from a win at the six-spot in singles play. The Musketeers improve to 1-1 on the year while IPFW falls to 0-3.
"This was a great team win," commented head coach Eric Toth. "It always feels good to get your first win of the season. I was pleased with Chris Herrlinger and J.T. Torbeck as they were able to come through with wins in crucial situations."
In singles play, XU newcomer sophomore Chris Herrlinger went the distance with IPFW's Carlos Gonzalez but came out on top, 6-7(4), 7-5, 1-0(5). In the two-spot, sophomore J.T. Torbeck got past Hermann Kuschke, 6-2, 7-6(5), and junior Ra'ees Ismail put away Nabil Filho, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3.
Junior Mike Dieciuc dispatched Nathan Jones in the four-spot, 6-4, 6-3, while senior Brian Schubert defeated Arturo Salgado, 6-0, 6-3, in the No. 5 position.
In doubles action, Herrlinger teamed up with freshman Brian Starr to down IPFW's duo of Gonzalez and Salgado, 8-3, at No. 1. XU won the doubles point as Ismail and Torbeck topped Kuschke and Sigaud in the No. 2 slot, 8-2.
Up next for the Musketeers will be a midweek trip to Columbus to take on the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
