CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Xavier men's tennis team battled a tough Cleveland State squad but came up just short in the end as the Vikings took the match, 4-3, in Cleveland on Saturday evening. With the loss Xavier is now 1-3 on the year while CSU evens out to 2-2 for the season.
"This was a disappointing loss for us," commented head coach Eric Toth. "I felt like we played well enough to win but that just didn't happen. I give a lot of credit to Cleveland State for hanging in there; they just out battled us today."
XU picked up the first point of the match by winning two of the three doubles contests. Sophomore J.T. Torbeck and freshman Brian Starr teamed up to beat CSU's Rob West and Robert Fox, 8-5, in the two-spot. At No. 3, the duo of junior Ra'ees Ismail and sophomore Anthony Palmenter bested the Vikings' Brad Groleski and Steven Wipprecht, 8-6.
In singles action, Ismail and Starr notched wins at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. CSU was able to collect wins in the four remaining flights.
Up next for the Musketeers is a neutral site match against Buffalo at CSU. First serve is set for 9 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27.
