Volleyball Posts 3-1 Win Over Rhode Island at Home

CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team kept its unbeaten conference streak alive Saturday night with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19) win over Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island at Cintas Center. Junior Hillary Otte tallied a match-high 14 kills on the night and two Musketeers registered double-doubles in the contest.
Junior Kelly Ruth tallied 13 kills to go with 15 digs for her fourth consecutive double-double while sophomore Claire Paszkiewicz set 21 assists and got under 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the year. Junior Lauren Kaminsky got under a team-high 17 digs while senior Jenn Welsh set 27 assists.
Xavier (13-8, 6-0 A-10) never trailed in either of the first two sets and the score was never tied. The Musketeers went up by as many as five several times in the first set before using a 4-0 run to close the frame with a 25-19 win. The story was much the same in the second set as XU found itself up 22-14. URI rallied with a three-point run but Xavier closed out the game with a kill from freshman Emily Mayers to end the set, 25-20.
After the 10-minute break, Rhode Island (9-11, 1-5 A-10) jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set. Xavier rallied to tie the game at 16-all and went ahead after two consecutive Musketeer kills. The set was tied five more times before URI scored two straight to take the set, 25-23.
XU never trailed in the fourth and final set but the game was tied five times. The last time the game was knotted 9-9 and the Musketeers used a 4-0 run to take the lead for good. Xavier held match-point at 24-16 but the Rams were not going quietly, scoring four consecutive points before XU put the match away with a kill from Ruth. Xavier took the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-1.
The Rams were led by Caitlyn Welsh with the team's only double-double (13K, 11D) and Peggy Doino with a match-high 18 digs.
The Musketeers return to action next weekend with a two-match road trip beginning at Duquesne on Friday, Oct. 24, with first serve set for 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 26, XU will travel to Saint Louis to take on SLU with a 2:00 p.m. start.
