Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight, Downs GW 3-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. - With two Musketeers posting double-doubles, the Xavier volleyball team won its fourth straight match by defeating Atlantic 10 foe George Washington, 3-1. XU improves to a perfect 2-0 in conference play with the win and 9-7 overall. Senior Jenn Welsh set 51 assists to go with 13 digs and junior Kelly Ruth posted a match-high 18 kills and got under 10 digs.
Also for the Musketeers, junior Hillary Otte tallied 14 kills and six assisted blocks while junior Lauren Kaminsky narrowly missed a double-double as she had 11 kills and nine digs. Freshman Michelle Matia recorded a career-high eight kills and an incredible eight assisted blocks in addition to one solo block. Sophomore Claire Paszkieiwcz as hit double figures in digs with a match-high 17.
George Washington (6-8, 1-3 A-10) was able to take the early 1-0 lead in the match after a 25-23 set-one victory. Xavier jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the Colonials used a 4-0 run to take over the advantage. The frame remained close throughout and the two squads found themselves knotted at 23 apiece before GW was able to collect the win.
Xavier (9-7, 2-0 A-10) went up 8-4 in the second set before using a 5-1 run to break open the set, 13-5. The Musketeers were ahead by eight, 19-11, when GW scored four straight forcing Xavier into a timeout. The Colonials pulled to within two, 24-22, but the Musketeers' Otte smashed down the winning kill to even the match at one game apiece.
In the third set, Matia capped off an opening 4-1 run with a kill before GW pulled even with XU, 7-7. Xavier led by as many as five throughout the set but the Colonials tried to stay in the set by rallying with three consecutive points to put the frame at 24-21. Holding set-point, the Musketeers were handed the third-set victory with a Colonial attack error.
The final frame started off much like the third as XU went ahead 4-1. The Colonials pulled to within two, 11-9, before the Musketeers rattled off four straight to take the 15-9 lead. GW would only muster six more points to XU's 10 to close out the set as Xavier won the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-1.
The Colonials were led by Leah Hill with 17 kills and 14 kills while Maggie Wright also tallied 14 digs.
Up next for the Musketeers will be two Atlantic 10 matches at home in Cintas Center this coming weekend. On Friday, Oct. 10, XU will welcome La Salle with a 7 p.m. start time. The La Salle match will be streamed live through www.goxavier.com. On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Musketeers will face Temple with first serve set for 5 p.m.
