CINCINNATI – The Xavier women’s basketball team played Akron to a 31-15 halftime lead, coasting to a 69-44 victory at Cintas Center Friday night. Sophomore Ta’Shia Phillips and freshman Tyeasha Moss added 14 points apiece on the way to Xavier’s seventh win of the season. The Musketeers improve to 7-2 while the Zips fall to 2-5.
Phillips drained 4-10 shots on the night to go along with 6-8 free throws made. She also grabbed 11 rebounds in 21 minutes of play.
Xavier’s Phillips duo were seeing double-double tonight as Ta’Shia netted 14 points to go with 11 rebounds while April scored 13 points with 12 boards. The last time two Musketeers posted a double-double was at North Carolina this season when Ta’Shia Phillips scored 23 and grabbed 25 as well as Tudy Reed going for 10 with 11 boards.
Sophomore floor general Special Jennings dished out five assists with only one turnover.
Moss came off the bench to add 14 points on 5-10 shooting for the night, including 4-7 from behind the arc.
The Musketeers had the game well in hand by the end of the first stanza, holding Akron to only six field goals. The lead ballooned due partially to domination on the offensive glass as XU snared 16 offensive rebounds for a 34-17 first half rebounding margin.
The rebounding supremacy continued throughout the second half as well, as Xavier played out their rebounding supremacy to the tune of a 61-32 margin.
Xavier’s 61 rebounds was one shy of tying the all-time single game rebounding record of 62 set at Marquette in 1991. The Musketeers tie for second place all-time instead, a mark previously set at Detroit in 1995.
Xavier’s first half defense was the best since holding Saint Joseph’s to 14 points on 6-24 shooting in last year’s 71-53 Xavier win at Cintas Center on January 16, 2008. The first half opened with a 19-5 Xavier run over the first 7:21.
The Musketeers will meet the University of Cincinnati Bearcats next week for the annual crosstown shootout on Sunday, December 7 at Fifth Third Arena. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
