WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Led by an outstanding performance by Mary Beth McKenna, the Xavier women's golf team finished fifth at the 2008 CAA Championship Tournament. James Madison held off the Musketeers from grabbing fourth by five strokes at the 6,150 yard, par-72 Golden Horseshoe Green Course.
Katherine Madsen of Georgia State out-dueled Ashley Tait of UNC-Wilmington by one stroke for the individual title at five-under. However, UNC-Wilmington claimed the team title by two strokes over Georgia State at 15-over par.
McKenna fired a 76 in the final round to go with rounds of 74 and 75 to earn a tie for seventh place at 225 (+9). The result bests her 2007 CAA Championship performace, when she tied with Xavier alum Kara Manis at 16-over par in eighth place to lead the Musketeers.
Freshman Rachel Levi picked a great time to shine, showing consistency with three-straight 78's that led to a 16th-place tie at 18-over par (234). The finish is her best since the Sea Trail Intercollegiate last September.
Fellow freshman Audrey Fellmeth also climbed the leaderboard after her final-round 78, a mark that put her one shot behind Levi in a tie for 22nd place at 19-over par.
Senior Diana Torry rallied in her final Xavier tournament with a 79 to close out the CAA Championship, giving her a tie for 37th at 30-over (246).
Lindsay Steiner, playing in her first CAA Championship, rounded out play for XU in 40th place after rounds of 86, 84, and 85, totaling 255 (+39).
Head Coach Tom Elfers was pleased with the Musketeers performance in the championship. McKenna exclaimed that "I hit my irons the best I've hit since last semester, but I couldn't buy a putt. It was a really nice course though and besides a few patches of rain the weather was great."
Xavier will add Michelle Winkler of East Granby, Conn. to the team next year, the second-best Connecticut prep golfer of 2007. Winkler will hope to replace the loss of seniors Diana Torry and Erin Gore to graduation.
