Baseball Falls at Cincinnati, 9-3, in Midweek Matchup

CINCINNATI - The Xavier baseball team fell, 9-3, to the Cincinnati Bearcats Wednesday evening at UC's Marge Schott Stadium. The Musketeers put up 11 hits but scored only three runs in midweek loss.
Three Musketeers had multiple hit games, including sophomore Bobby Freking who went 3-for-4 at the plate for the day.
Cincinnati (26-17) got the scoring started off first by putting three runs up in the first inning. The Bearcats scored another one in the third before XU could get a run of its own.
Xavier (19-25) got a run back in the fourth after Andy Zellers singled to right and advanced to second when senior Robbie Kelley reached on a fielder's choice. Zellers reached third on a wild pitch and then was able to come across on another wild pitch. UC held the 4-1 lead after four.
UC put up three more in the fifth and XU was able to score another run in the sixth. Senior Dan Hayden blasted a solo shot to left center to put Xavier to within with five, 7-2.
The Bearcats scored two more in the seventh and the Musketeers tallied three hits in the ninth and scored a run before loading the bases but XU could not convert as Cincinnati took the 9-3 win.
Freshman Tom Shirley (1-3) took the loss for Xavier after giving up three earned runs over one inning pitched.
Brian Garman (3-2) got the win for Cincinnati after striking out two over five innings of work.
The Musketeers will head to Pittsburgh, Pa., for a three-game conference series with Duquesne this weekend, May 2-4.
