No. 15/16 Xavier (15-2, 4-0 Atlantic 10) used a 12-1 run early midway through the first half to open a double-digit lead and never looked back, defeating La Salle (9-7, 1-1 A-10), 73-53. B.J. Raymond led the XU attack with 16 points, while Derrick Brown scored 15 and Jason Love added 10. Love grabbed nine rebounds, including eight in the second half, and Terrell Holloway contributed six assists. Yves Mekongo Mbala and Rodney Greed led the Explorers with 15 points apiece. with Rodney Green. Kimmani Barrett grabbed eight rebounds and Mekongo Mbala, Green, and Paul Johnson each had three assists.
Xavier is now 114-17 (.870) overall during its nine seasons at Cintas Center, and 56-10 (.848) against Atlantic 10 competition in its on-campus home arena. The Musketeers have won 18 straight conference games at home (8-0, 2006-07; 8-0, 2007-08; and 2-0, 2008-09).
Xavier dished out 19 assists, the second most by the Musketeers this season. The season high for assists was 20 against Auburn (12-3-08).
The 4-for-9 performance from the free throw line by the Explorers marked season lows in both makes and attempts by a Xavier opponent this season. The previous lows were five made free throws by Rhode Island (1-15-09) and 10 attempts by Rhode Island and against Robert Morris (12-31-08).
Career Highs
Terrell Holloway dished out a career-best six assists. His previous high was five, which he accomplished at Rhode Island (1-15-09) and against Robert Morris (12-31-08).
Jason Love converted a career-best eight free throws in eight attempts. His previous high was seven made free throws against Fordham (1-11-09).
Runs
Leading 12-9 at 12:49 of the first half, XU went on a 12-1 run to take a 24-10 lead at 8:08. Derrick Brown scored 6 points and Terrell Holloway added 4 points to lead the surge.
Up Next: Xavier hits the road again for another two-game stretch away from Cintas Center. The Musketeers travel to St. Bonaventure to face the Bonnies on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. XU leads the all-time series 20-15, including the last seven straight. Last season, Xavier defeated SBU at Cintas Center, 83-68, on January 9. In that contest C.J. Anderson scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Musketeer attack, while B.J. Raymond also poured in 21 points. Following the St. Bonaventure contest, XU steps out of league competition to visit the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge on Saturday, January 24, at 8:00 p.m.. The series between XU and LSU is tied at 1-all, with the Tigers winning the most recent meeting, 78-62, December 22, 1980, in Baton Rouge. Xavier's win came on December 28, 1964, when the Musketeers knocked off the Tigers in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 93-87.
