DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - In its first game of the Bethune-Cookman Spring Break Classic, the Xavier baseball team downed Georgia State, 5-1. Freshman Nathan Mutsch picked up his second win of the season on the mound and junior Bobby Freking led the Musketeer offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
Xavier (4-3) scored one run each in the second, fourth and fifth innings to take the early 3-0 lead over GSU. XU scattered five singles over the first five frames while holding the Panthers Scoreless.
Georgia State (6-3) got a run back in the top of the sixth when Logan's single to left field sent home Hogan from second. That would be the only run the Panthers could muster in the contest.
XU put up two more in the seventh as senior Adam Pasono led off the inning with a home run to left field and senior Steve Brown was able to make it home on a wild pitch to give the Musketeers the final margin, 5-1.
Mutsch (2-0) tossed seven complete innings to collect his second win of his career. He struck out seven while walking none and gave up one earned run on five hits. Senior Brett Greenwell threw two innings of relief, striking out one batter.
Moore (2-1) took the loss for the Panthers. He put in 6.1 innings of work striking out three while walking one and gave up four earned runs.
Xavier plays host Bethune-Cookman tonight at 7 p.m.
