Jordan Crawford scored 23 points and Terrell Holloway had a career-high 10 assists to lead Xavier (15-6, 7-1 Atlantic 10) to a 108-60 victory against Fordham (2-18, 0-8). Crawford was 7-for-11 from the field and 9-for-9 from the free throw line to pace the Musketeers. Jamel McLean added 16 points, Kenny Frease had 14, and Brad Redford scored 11. Frease grabbed 8 rebounds and Holloway had 10 assists. Fordham was led by Brenton Butler who scored 26 points and Chris Gaston who added 23 points. Gaston had 9 rebounds and Butler had 3 assists.
Xavier scored a season-high 108 points. The previous high was 105 against Sacred Heart (11-21-09). The 48-point margin of victory was also a season high. The previous high was 44 points when XU defeated Bowling Green 101-57 (11-17-09). It also marked the most point scored by an XU squad since a 108-70 win against Virginia (1-3-08).
Xavier’s 58.2 percent shooting performance (39-for-67) was the second-best of the season. XU shot 64.8 percent (35-for-54) from the field against Bowling Green (11-17).
The Musketeers dished out a season-high 26 assists. The previous high was 20 against Sacred Heart (11-21-09).
Xavier had a season-high 13 steals. The previous high was 12 steals in the double-overtime game at Wake Forest (1-3-10). Fordham’s 21 turnovers also were the most by an XU opponent. The previous high was 19 by Wake Forest.
With today’s win, Xavier extended its home winning streak to 21 games, the fifth-longest home court winning streak in the country. The 21-game streak is the longest by any XU squad since Cintas Center opened for the 2000-01 season. Now in its 10th season playing at Cintas Center, XU is 132-17 (.886) overall at its on-campus arena.
XU improved to 67-10 (.870) against Atlantic 10 competition at Cintas Center. The Musketeers have won 29 consecutive Atlantic 10 games at Cintas Center, which is the second-longest streak in A-10 history.
Xavier is 14-2 this season when it scores at least 70 points, with its only blemishes being the 96-92 double-overtime setback at Wake Forest and the 77-72 loss at Temple. XU is 12-2 this year when it holds its opponent under 70.
Through eight Atlantic 10 Conference games, Xavier has held opponents to just 20.0 percent shooting (29-for-145) from behind the three-point arc. Conversely, the Musketeers are shooting 39.5 percent (60-for-152) from behind the arc in conference play.
Terrell Holloway dished out a career-high 10 assists. His previous career high was 8 assists at La Salle (1-7-10). The last time an XU player had more than 10 assists in a game, Stanley Burrell had 12 dishes against Duquesne (2-21-08).
Jamel McLean scored 16 points, including 4-for-4 from the free throw line. McLean had converted his last nine attempts from the line including his final attempt in the Rhode Island game, all four in the Duquesne contest, and today’s perfect performance.
Jeff Robinson matched his career highs with 6 points and 3 rebounds. He also scored 6 points against Bowling Green (11-17) and grabbed 3 boards against Duquesne (1-28).
Joe Hughes scored a career-high 7 points.
Runs
Xavier opened the game with a 10-2 run after Jordan Crawford converted a three-point play at 16:37. Crawford led the attack with 5 points.
Trailing 14-4 at 14:43, Fordham went on a 9-0 run to pull to close to 14-13 at 11:02. Chris Gaston scored 6 straight points to lead the Rams.
Leading 28-22 at 4:54, XU went on an 11-2 run to take a 39-24 lead at 2:31. Kenny Frease scored 4 points to lead the spurt.
Up Next: The Musketeers hit the road for a three-game road trip beginning Wednesday, February 3, at UMass. Xavier leads the all-time series with UMass, 12-8, including wins in the last four meetings. Last season, XU escaped with an 82-80 victory against the Minutemen at Cintas Center, despite committing a season-high 23 turnovers. XU trailed 67-64 with 7:21 remaining, but B.J. Raymond knocked in a couple of key three-pointers down the stretch to help the Musketeers avoid the upset. Derrick Brown led XU with 23 points and eight rebounds while Raymond added 22 points. Following the game at Massachusetts, Xavier will return to UD arena for a rematch with the Dayton Flyers on Saturday, February 6, before traveling to the Sunshine State to face the University of Florida for the first time since December 28, 1959.
