CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Senior Tommy Kauffmann set a new school record to help the men's cross country squad capture second place with 118 points at the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Cedarville University. The men's finish is the best by any Xavier squad at the event. Three women finished in the top 25 en route to a sixth place finish for the women off 168 points.
Head coach Dan Flaute was pleased with both squads. "The guys ran an outstanding race from top to bottom," Flaute said. "It was our best race of the year. I think Hank Geer really stood out to me today, breaking his personal best time and the 25 minute barrier. The girls ran well too, they had a lot of tough competition. They are having some great results and are continuing to drop individual times."
Kauffmann finished in sixth place breaking his previous personal and school record by seven seconds with a time of 24:43. Sophomore Hank Geer also earned a personal record off a 24:59 effort, good for 14th place. Geer felt like things were going his way right from the beginning of the race. "I felt good after the first mile and still was feeling it after the three-mile mark, so I knew it was going to be a good race."
Two-time A-10 Rookie of the Week honoree Tom Ohlman came in 18th place and was the second fastest freshman in the field with a personal best time of 25:14. Ohlman's time beats his previous record, set at the National Catholic Championships by 20 seconds.
Junior Keith Albrektson shaved off more time off of his personal-best time. Albrektson's 19th place 25:14 broke his best by 16 seconds. Junior Ben Foley also ran a personal-best time of 25:48 which earned him a 33rd place finish. Senior Joe Ryan broke his personal best by 35 seconds. His 26:14 effort gave him 45th place overall.
On the women's side, junior Caylin Howell ran another sensational race. Howell's 21st place time of 18:21 broke her personal best by 10 seconds. Rookie Ashley Vincent was right behind Howell, in 22nd place with a time of 18:22. Vincent was the fourth fastest freshman in the field and broke her previous personal-best by 32 seconds. This also marked the third time all season Vincent has visited the top-25.
Vincent was pleased with the way she and the rest of the girls squad raced. "We got mentally ready today which helped us push through," Vincent said. "I had a really good kick at the end of the race and knew I had to place for my team."
Former A-10 Rookie of the Week Abby Fischer broke her personal record by 22 seconds, to finish in 25th place with a time of 18:28. Sophomore Rachel Clark came in 38th place with a time of 18:49 which broke her best by seven seconds. Senior Caitlin Thomas was the final scorer for the Muskteers, off of a 18:56 effort.
Freshman Clare Fischer ran a season-best time of 19:00, while sophomore Kaitlin Price beat her personal-best time by two seconds with a time of 19:10.
Miami (OH) swept the event, earning first place in both the men's and women's races.
The Musketeers are next in action October 16 as the team travels to Princeton, N.J. to take part in the Princeton Invitational. Stay tuned to GOXAVIER.com for more information.
