No. 6 seed Xavier defeated No. 3 seed Pittsburgh to advance to the school's fifth Sweet 16 all-time, including its third straight.
Pittsburgh led 18-15 with nine minutes left in the first half before the Musketeers turned up the defense and offense, reeling off a 16-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 31-18 lead with four minutes left in the half. Sophomore Jordan Crawford led the XU run with eight points while junior Danté Jackson hit a pair of three-pointers.
Pitt battled back to close the gap to seven points, 35-28, at halftime.
Xavier led by 13 points, 50-37, with 13:40 left following a Crawford three-pointer. Pitt answered with a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to close within a point, 50-49, with nine minutes left.
Then it was XU's turn for a run, outscoring the Panthers 7-0 on four free throws from senior Jason Love and an old fashioned three-point play from sophomore Terrell Holloway. Xavier led 57-49 with six minutes left.
Pitt managed to close within three points four times down the stretch, including 71-68 with eight seconds left. A last second potential game-tying three-pointer fell short and Xavier had successfully avenged its loss to Pittsburgh in the 2009 NCAA Tournament East Regional Semifinals.
Crawford led all scorers with 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field to go with six rebounds. Love added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Holloway had 13 points.
