CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's soccer team lost a tough match to Duquesne 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Xavier Soccer Complex.
The Musketeers fall to 6-5-3, and 3-3-0 in the Atlantic 10. The win improves Duquesne to 6-7-2 overall, and 2-4-0 in the conference.
Joshua Patterson put the Dukes up 1-0 at the start of the 16th minute as he received a pass from Dave Cassanelli across midfield. Patterson took the ball and broke free, setting himself up for a one-on-one with goalkeeper Justin Marshall who was unable to stop the shot.
Simon Gomez finished off a flurry of shots in the 63rd minute to give the Dukes a 2-0 lead. Gomez took the initial shot from the corner which Marshall knocked the shot away. Marshall then stopped a shot by Stefan Lundberg, which rebounded to Gomez who put it away.
Xavier had two very good chances to tie the game up in the second half. Andy Dimbi nearly scored in the 53rd minute on a free kick from 20 yards that hit the post. One minute later, James Queree had a chance in front of the net but sent his shot high over the crossbar.
The loss drops Xavier into the middle of pack for a spot in the A-10 tournament with three games left in conference play.
Duquesne won the shots 24-10, with nine shots on goal to Xavier's three. Corner kicks were tied at 4-all. It was a cleaned played game by both teams, as only nine fouls were called.
Dimbi led the Musketeers with three shots, with one on goal. Lundberg came off the bench to record five shots, four on goal, for the Dukes.
Marshall was the losing goalkeeper, stopping six shots. Colin Thorp won his first start in goal this year for the Dukes. He made three saves.
The Musketeers conclude their home schedule when they host Dayton for Senior Day beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday. They will round out their season on the road against La Salle and Fordham in two weeks.
